Barrister Gohar Khan, the leader of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), wants his party’s “political prisoners,” including founder Imran Khan, to be set free. This comes after army chief General Asim Munir stressed the need for a “healing touch” following the February 8 general elections.
General Munir congratulated the nation on the successful election and called for stable leadership and a unifying approach to move past Pakistan’s turbulent political history. He emphasized the importance of a unified government representing the diverse polity and pluralism of Pakistan.
In response, Barrister Gohar stated that a “healing touch” means there should be no political prisoners in the country. He emphasized the importance of respecting PTI’s mandate for this healing process.
Gohar clarified that a “united government” doesn’t necessarily mean a coalition government. He explained it as every party being united in respecting and regarding the people’s mandate.
During an interview with Arab News, Gohar mentioned that PTI is close to victory in Punjab and has a two-thirds majority in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. He expressed confidence in forming the government in the center, Punjab, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Gohar complained about the Election Commission of Pakistan’s delay in releasing results, giving them a deadline until midnight to announce all results. If not, he warned of peaceful protests in areas where results have not been disclosed.
He also hinted at the possible release of PTI’s founder, Imran Khan, in the coming days. Gohar expressed confidence in going to the high court to overturn convictions against Khan, allowing him to be released soon.
